Voice Memos from Finisterre

by Sorana

about

{ - NB: Shared/released via phone, see below - }

For the last 18 months of someone’s life we largely communicated via voice memos, exchanging stories, poems, anecdotes, songs, & reading out articles, encouragement, & our own writing to one another. One day I received what was - but hoped wasn’t - but knew was - their last voice message, & against the noise of various hospital machinery I heard the words ‘this is probably my last’. There was something so viscerally big in hearing such small sounds... a 'voice memo intimacy'.

I’d thought a lot about this sort of electronic intimacy since. I realised that voice memos sat between these things - I could take you where I go, have you hear the small things as I experience what it sounds like being me, & still not give away all that much. I could offer a little of the creative intimacy many of us’ve shared via voice memos: initial sketches of ideas that may or may not become bigger things (time will tell!), the sounds my home & whereabouts make, the weather, & my mistakes, & you can hear me as I finally give in to writing into the night, making small things as an act of defiance against The Big Things, & I can still keep my privacy & keep to.

So here we are… an EP made almost entirely of voice memos with a ‘can I write an EP in 48h using just my phone?’ challenge thrown in because, well, as you know I do love a challenge (disclaimer: I assembled the files in a DAW & then couldn’t resist mixing!).

There’re a few of these, which I shared via iPhone too, making it as 'iPhone' a release as possible. The time's up for having signed up to receive the EP(s), but I'd be happy to rustle up a code & link for you if you'd like to hear it.

Thank you for being here :D
